Network attached storage is primarily about providing huge quantities of data more efficiently than using local drives and operating systems within a server or a group of servers. One of the prime advantages is that disparate operating systems can access the same data. Because of the nature of the network connection and specially designed custom file systems, low block count files are the best to utilise this type of technology.

The NAS is now commonly being combined with SAN's to provide the scalability the product technology was previously lacking.
